Prolapse Around Calving — The Emergency You Prepare For, Not Treat

Updated 26 Aug 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

A mass of tissue appearing at the vulva — before calving (usually the vagina) or after it (the graver uterine version) — is among dairy's most alarming sights. Both are veterinary emergencies, but the farmer's response in the first hour, and the risk factors managed in the weeks before, decide much of the story.

عام علامات

  • Pre-calving: a pink rounded mass showing when she lies, often retreating when she stands — typically late pregnancy
  • Post-calving: a large mass expelled after the calf — the true emergency, worsening by the minute
  • Straining that feeds on itself — the more out, the more she pushes
  • The exposed tissue drying, dirtying or tearing as time passes
  • An animal that prolapsed before carrying a known repeat risk

ممکنہ وجوہات

  • Late-pregnancy pressure and hormone-loosened supports — the vaginal version's recipe
  • Hard prolonged calvings and continued straining afterwards — the uterine version's trigger
  • Low calcium around calving weakening the very muscles that hold things in
  • Old, many-calved cows with stretched supports; over-fat late-pregnancy animals
  • Constant lying on a floor sloping toward the tail — pressure aimed the wrong way

کسان کو کیا دیکھنا چاہیے

  • Timing and size: pre-calving lying-only show, or post-calving full expulsion?
  • Is she straining continuously? Standing or down?
  • How soiled/damaged is the exposed tissue — and can you keep it moist and clean while help comes?
  • Calcium context: fresh calver with cold ears (milk fever weakens retention)?
  • Floor slope where she lies, and her body condition and calving history

Response first: call the veterinary doctor IMMEDIATELY — replacement and retention is skilled, urgent work — and while waiting: keep her quiet and preferably standing (walking calmly beats lying and straining), keep the mass clean and MOIST (support it in a clean wetted cloth/sheet; never let it dry, drag or freeze), and keep dogs, dung and further injury away; do not attempt pushing it back yourself, which usually adds tearing and infection to the emergency. Prevention lives in transition management: proper pre-calving feeding (the controlled-calcium logic of Transition -21 supports exactly the muscle tone that holds tissue in), avoiding over-fat late pregnancy, bedding on level or slightly forward-sloping ground, and prompt milk-fever treatment — the calcium collapse and the prolapse are old partners. A prolapse survivor deserves her repeat-risk noted in the diary and mentioned before her next calving.

A post-calving uterine prolapse is an extreme same-hour emergency — shock and blood loss can kill quickly; keep the organ moist, clean and supported, keep her calm, and get the doctor moving NOW. Pre-calving vaginal prolapses also need veterinary management before calving day arrives.

اکثر پوچھے گئے سوالات

The pre-calving bulge goes back in when she stands - is it still serious?

It needs the doctor's management, yes — lying-only vaginal prolapses tend to worsen toward calving and complicate it. The doctor may place retention support and will plan her calving; treat it as scheduled-urgent rather than ignorable.

Why does milk fever connect to prolapse?

Low blood calcium weakens all muscle — including the womb and the supports holding it in. That is why the two arrive together in fresh cows, and why transition feeding that protects calcium balance quietly protects against both.
