Bohli (Colostrum) — The First 2 Hours That Decide a Calf's Whole Life

A calf's whole life — its growth, its immunity, even the milk it will one day give — is shaped more by its first two hours than by any month that follows. And the deciding factor is one thing: bohli, the thick yellowish first milk (colostrum) the mother produces right after calving.

Most farmers know bohli matters. Far fewer know how much it matters, how fast the window closes, and how easily it's wasted.

A calf is born with zero immunity

Unlike a human baby, a calf receives no disease protection in the womb. It is born with essentially no antibodies at all — its only source is the mother's bohli, which is loaded with them. No bohli, and the calf faces its first weeks of life — scours, pneumonia, navel infection — completely undefended. This is why calves that miss proper colostrum so often become the "always sick, always weak" animals of the herd, no matter how well they're fed later.

The 2-hour window — and why it closes

Here's the part that surprises many experienced farmers: the calf's gut can only absorb those antibodies for a short time. Absorption is at its peak in the first 2 hours after birth, drops sharply through the day, and by 24 hours the door is nearly shut — the same bohli that would have built lifelong immunity in hour one passes through almost uselessly a day later.

The rule: first bohli feeding within 2 hours of birth — sooner is better. Don't wait for the calf to find the udder on its own, and don't wait until the morning milking time. This one habit prevents more calf illness than any medicine you will ever buy.

How much, and for how long

  • First feeding: roughly 1.5–2 litres for a typical calf, within 2 hours of birth.
  • First 24 hours: aim for about 10% of the calf's body weight in bohli across the day (a 25 kg calf needs around 2.5 litres, split over feedings).
  • Duration: keep the calf on the mother's bohli/transition milk for the first 3 days. It keeps protecting the gut locally even after absorption closes.

If the calf is too weak to suckle, don't give up — milk the bohli out and feed it with a clean bottle and nipple. A weak calf needs bohli more, not less.

The mistakes that quietly cost calves

  • Giving water, gud, or anything else first. The first thing into a newborn calf's stomach should be bohli — nothing else. Traditional "first drops" of other things only delay and dilute the real protection.
  • Waiting for the mother to fully clean the calf or stand up comfortably. Help the process along; the clock is running.
  • Discarding bohli as "dirty milk." Its thick yellow look is exactly what protection looks like. It is not spoiled — it's concentrated.
  • Selling the first days' milk. Bohli has no place in the can. Dairies don't want it, and your calf desperately does.
  • Dirty hands, dirty bottle, dirty shed floor. The same first hours when immunity arrives are also when infections try to enter — through the navel and the mouth. Clean hands, a clean feeding bottle, and a dry calving area are part of colostrum feeding, not separate from it.

Day 4 onwards: the handoff

Bohli's job is days 1–3. From day 4, the next stage of building a strong calf begins: keep milk feeding as normal, and start offering a palatable calf starter feed alongside clean water — small amounts at first, increasing as the calf's interest grows. Early starter feeding is what develops the rumen (the "first stomach") and gets the calf to solid feed and fast growth sooner. Our calf growth feed guide covers that full journey, and Goka Calf Starter is built exactly for it — from day 4 to month 5.

When to call the doctor

If the calf hasn't stood or suckled within a couple of hours, seems limp, or the mother has no milk let-down at all, involve your veterinary doctor the same day — a weak start compounds fast in newborns, and the first day is when help works best. Feed and bohli support recovery, but they don't replace treatment.

A strong dairy herd isn't built at milking time — it's built in the first two hours of each new calf's life. Get the bohli right, and everything that follows gets easier.
