Seasonal Feeding Calendar for Kashmir Dairy Farmers
08 Jul 2026 • Falah Enterprises
Kashmir's four distinct seasons each bring their own feeding challenges. Here's a practical calendar overview to plan around, with links to our detailed guides for each season.
Winter (roughly December-March)
Green fodder disappears, and animals burn extra energy staying warm. This is the season requiring the most active feed management — compound feed becomes essential rather than optional once green fodder runs out, and water should be offered lukewarm 2-3 times daily. Read our full winter feed management guide.
Spring (roughly April-May)
The spring green flush brings abundant young, lush grass — great for quantity, but low in fibre, which can drop milk fat if fed without a fibre balance. Introduce spring grazing gradually and always pair it with dry fodder. See our spring green fodder guide.
Summer (roughly June-July)
Heat stress becomes the main concern — reduced intake, increased water needs, and feeding timing adjustments (early morning, late evening) to avoid peak heat. See our heat stress and feed management guide.
Monsoon / Rainy season (roughly July-August)
Wet, mold-prone fodder and sudden diet shifts from dry to lush can cause digestive upsets. Silage becomes a valuable option for preserving the season's fodder surplus. See our silage and rainy season feeding guide.
Autumn (roughly September-November)
A transition season — fodder quality begins declining as growth slows, and this is the practical time to plan and stock dry fodder and compound feed reserves ahead of the coming winter scarcity.
The throughline: plan ahead, don't react
The recurring theme across every season is that reactive feeding — realizing you're short on fodder or feed only once the season has already changed — costs more than planning ahead. Stocking compound feed before winter scarcity hits, or preparing silage before the rainy season surplus arrives, keeps your animals consistently fed rather than playing catch-up.
