Blood in Milk — Pink Milk in the Fresh Cow and Beyond

Pink or blood-tinged milk alarms every household — and its meaning depends heavily on timing. In the first days after calving it is usually a burst capillary in a suddenly swollen udder, self-resolving with gentle care. Appearing at other times, or persisting, it points to injury or mastitis and earns a veterinary look.
Aam Alaamaat
- Pink, red-streaked or rusty milk from one quarter (rarely more)
- Freshly calved udder: swollen, taut, sometimes with visible surface bruising
- Otherwise normal milk appearance after settling — a pink layer settling out
- Warning versions: clots and watery milk with heat and pain (mastitis picture), or blood after a known kick/injury
- Persistence: fresh-cow pinkness fading over days vs blood continuing or worsening
Mumkin Wajuhaat
- Post-calving udder engorgement bursting small capillaries — the common benign cause
- Udder knocks and kicks, thorn or wire scratches, rough or knuckling milking
- Mastitis — infection inflaming and bleeding into the quarter
- Ocassional stubborn small bleeding points continuing longer
- Any quarter suddenly bleeding in a previously normal mid-lactation cow deserves suspicion

- Timing: fresh calver or mid-lactation?
- One quarter or several — and any heat, hardness, pain in it?
- Milk beyond the colour: clots, wateriness, smell (the mastitis fingerprints)
- Any visible injury, and any change in the milker's technique
- Trend over days: fading pink (good) or continuing blood (needs the doctor)
Feed Guidance
For the fresh-cow case: gentleness and patience — milk the quarter out softly and completely at each session (retained bloody milk clots and invites infection), avoid vigorous udder massage that reopens capillaries, apply nothing harsh, and expect steady clearing over several days as the udder settles; that milk goes to neither can nor kitchen, and post-calving milk is anyway in its withholding days. Keep the transition feeding correct — a well-managed pre-calving udder engorges less violently, which is one more quiet benefit of proper Transition feeding before and after calving. For any other pattern — pain, heat, clots, injury, or blood persisting past the first week — the veterinary doctor should examine the quarter; mastitis with blood is treated as mastitis, urgently.
