Salty or Off-Taste Milk — When the Flavour Changes Before Anything Else

A household that drinks its own milk notices taste before any machine does — and a quarter turning salty or odd-flavoured is often the earliest whisper of udder trouble, late-lactation change, or a feed taint. Taste is data; here's how to read it.

Feed Guidance
One salty quarter deserves the mastitis workup even when the udder looks calm: black-plate testing each milking, extra hygiene, complete emptying, and a veterinary check if it persists or any other sign joins — catching subclinical mastitis at the salty stage is catching it cheap. All-quarter taste changes usually trace to the trough or the storage: review what was fed in the last day (strong weeds, spoiled corners, heavy single-feed loads of pungent fodders taint milk within hours), feed such items right AFTER milking rather than before so flavours clear by the next session, and audit the cooling-and-vessel chain. Late-lactation saltiness in an otherwise healthy udder is nature's drying-off notice — plan the dry period rather than fighting the flavour.
