Appetite is the master gauge of cattle health — and 'she's not eating properly' is the most common opening line ever spoken to a vet. Behind it hides everything from sour trough leftovers to serious disease. Here's the farmer's structured workup: what to observe and try in the first day, and which findings end the home phase immediately.
Common Signs
- Refusing all feed vs picking at fodder but refusing dana (a telling split)
- Cud chewing reduced or absent alongside
- Dung changes, dullness, milk dip travelling with the appetite
- Interest without commitment: sniffs feed, turns away — often mouth pain or nausea-like states
- The red-flag companions: fever, bloat, grunting, no dung, down — each ends home workup
Possible Causes
- Feed-side causes: spoiled/musty batch, sudden ration change, sour trough residue, frozen or foul water
- Rumen upsets: acidosis after grain, simple indigestion, early bloat
- Pain somewhere: mouth sores, hardware, foot pain that makes standing-to-eat costly
- Disease onset: fevers of every origin open with appetite loss
- Metabolic states in fresh cows: ketosis famously kills concentrate appetite first
What the Farmer Should Check
- Split the refusal: fodder vs dana vs water — patterns point (dana-only refusal in a fresh cow says ketosis; everything-refusal says systemic)
- Temperature — the single most valuable number for the phone call
- Trough forensics: smell yesterday's residue, inspect the current batch, check the water
- Mouth glance: sores, foul smell, packed cud in the cheek?
- Cud, dung, rumen movement, and whether her group-mates eat the same feed happily
Feed Guidance
The one-day home protocol for a bright, fever-free animal: clean the trough completely, offer small amounts of the most tempting safe feeds (fresh green, good hay, a warm bran mash — novelty and aroma sell), verify clean lukewarm water is actually being drunk, halve concentrate rather than pushing it, and re-observe in hours, not days. What you're doing is separating 'feed problem' (she eats the fresh tempting offer → fix the feed/trough/water) from 'animal problem' (she refuses even temptation → the doctor's territory). NEVER stretch the home phase past a day of true refusal, and skip it entirely when red flags ride along — fever, bloat, pain-grunting, no dung, or a fresh-calver pattern (ketosis needs its own prompt treatment). Appetite lost is milk lost at compound interest; the early call is the cheap call.
