Milk Fever in Dairy Cows — Prevention Through Feed

Updated 08 Jul 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

Milk fever (low blood calcium around calving) is one of the most common — and most preventable — transition problems in dairy cows. It usually strikes within 72 hours of calving, when calcium demand for milk suddenly spikes faster than the body can respond.

Aam Alaamaat

  • Cow goes down and cannot rise soon after calving
  • Muscle tremors, weakness or wobbly walking around calving time
  • Cold ears and cold skin, subnormal body temperature
  • Reduced appetite and rumen movement right after calving
  • S-shaped kink in the neck (classic milk fever posture) in advanced cases

Mumkin Wajuhaat

  • Sudden calcium demand for colostrum and milk production after calving
  • Dry-period diet too high in calcium, which suppresses the body's own calcium-mobilizing hormones
  • Older cows (3rd+ lactation) are more prone than first-calvers
  • High-producing cows and certain breeds face higher risk
  • Inadequate transition feeding in the last 2-3 weeks before calving

Kisan Ko Kya Check Karna Chahiye

  • Is the dry cow's diet unusually high in calcium in the weeks before calving?
  • Is a proper transition feed used in the last 2-3 weeks pre-calving?
  • Has this cow had milk fever in a previous lactation? Repeat risk is high
  • Is the cow being monitored closely in the first 48-72 hours after calving?

Feed Guidance

The dry-period diet should avoid excess calcium so the cow's body stays primed to mobilize its own calcium reserves at calving. Feed GOKA Dry Feed through the dry period and switch to GOKA Transition -21 in the final ~21 days before expected calving — this transition feed is formulated to support a smoother calcium shift. After calving, GOKA Transition +21 continues that support through the highest-risk window. If a cow goes down and cannot rise, this is a veterinary emergency requiring immediate calcium treatment — feed alone cannot treat an active case.

Can milk fever be treated with feed alone once a cow goes down?

No — an active milk fever case (cow down, unable to rise) is a veterinary emergency needing immediate calcium treatment. Feed strategy is for prevention in the weeks before calving, not treatment of an active episode.

Which cows are most at risk of milk fever?

Older cows (3rd lactation and beyond), high-producing cows, and cows that have had milk fever in a previous calving are at higher risk. First-calf heifers are less commonly affected.

Why would feeding MORE calcium before calving increase the risk?

A calcium-rich dry-period diet allows the body to "relax" its calcium-mobilizing systems. When calving suddenly demands a lot of calcium for milk, the body responds too slowly. A controlled transition diet keeps those systems primed.
