Newborn Calf Hypothermia — The Cold That Kills in the First Hours
Updated 26 Aug 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor
आम लक्षण
- Calf slow to lift its head, stand or suckle after birth
- Cold mouth and cold tongue — a warm mouth is the quick field check
- Weak or absent suckle reflex when a clean finger is offered
- Shivering early on; the dangerous stage is when shivering STOPS
- Limp, sleepy calf that stops trying
संभावित कारण
- Born wet into freezing air — evaporation strips heat within minutes
- Mother slow to lick dry, or calving in an exposed spot
- No colostrum energy onboard — bohli is also the calf's first fuel
- Drafty floor-level air and thin bedding where the calf lies
- Weak or premature calves with low reserves start closer to the edge
किसान को क्या जाँचना चाहिए
- Is the calving area deep-bedded, dry and out of drafts before the due date?
- Are old towels or sacks ready to rub the calf dry immediately?
- Did the calf get bohli within the first two hours — warmth from inside?
- Is the calf's mouth warm and the suckle reflex present?
- In deep winter, is there a warm corner (or heat source used safely) for the first days?

A calf that is limp, cold-mouthed and no longer shivering is in danger — warm it immediately (dry bedding, wrapping, safe warmth) and call your veterinary doctor urgently.
