Newborn Calf Hypothermia — The Cold That Kills in the First Hours

A calf is born wet into a winter shed — and a wet newborn loses body heat frighteningly fast. Hypothermia is one of the most preventable causes of newborn calf loss in cold-climate sheds, and the prevention is towels, bedding and bohli, not medicines.

- In deep winter, is there a warm corner (or heat source used safely) for the first days?

Warmth and colostrum are the same emergency: rub the calf vigorously dry the moment the mother allows, bed it deep and draft-free, and get warm bohli into it within two hours — a fed calf generates its own heat, an unfed one cannot. If the calf is too weak to suckle, milk the bohli and bottle-feed it lukewarm. Through the first winter weeks, keep milk feeds at body-warmth (never cold), feed on time so the internal furnace never goes out, and start calf starter from day 4 as normal — early rumen development eventually becomes the calf's own central heating.

A calf that is limp, cold-mouthed and no longer shivering is in danger — warm it immediately (dry bedding, wrapping, safe warmth) and call your veterinary doctor urgently.
