The cow who built the household ages like everyone else: teeth wear, digestion mellows, joints stiffen, lactations soften. Old-cow care is honest arithmetic wrapped in gratitude — feeding her the way age needs, and facing the keep-or-cull question with clear eyes rather than either sentimentality or coldness.
Common Signs
- Chewing slower, dropping half-chewed wads, preferring soft feeds — the teeth talking
- Condition harder to hold on the same ration that once fattened her
- Stiff first steps after lying; longer lying spells
- Yield stepping down lactation by lactation; calving intervals stretching
- Winter hitting her harder than the young stock each year
Possible Causes
- Worn, loose or lost teeth turning long fodder into hard labour
- Aging digestion extracting less from the same feed
- Joint wear making standing-to-eat and walking-to-water genuine costs
- Cumulative history: old injuries, mastitis scars, each lactation's toll
- The economics beneath: feed cost stays full while output eases down
What the Farmer Should Check
- Mouth check yearly: tooth wear explains many 'mystery' old-cow declines
- Condition trend season over season — hold, or slow slide?
- Is she still breeding back reasonably, calving without trouble, udder serviceable?
- Her winter: does she come through it, or through it BADLY each time?
- The honest ledger: her real yield and calf value against her real feed bill
Feed Guidance
Feed to her mouth and pace: chaff fodder FINE so worn teeth can manage, favour soft leafy hay over coarse straw, moisten concentrate into easy mashes, give her a slow-eater's unhurried trough spot away from pushy juniors, minerals daily always, and winter warmth/bedding priority — age feels cold first. Many old cows repay this tailored care with several more sound, calm, profitable lactations; the udder and womb often outlast the teeth if feeding adapts. The deciding well part: judge each year on breeding-back, calving ease, udder health, winter resilience and the honest feed-versus-output ledger — and when the balance truly turns, a planned, decent transition (sold fit and fairly, not starved into worthlessness first) honours her better than a slow decline. Write the assessment yearly; drift is the enemy of both kindness and economics.
