Teat Cuts and Injuries — Saving the Teat, and the Quarter Behind It
Updated 26 Aug 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor
आम लक्षण
- Visible cut, tear or crush wound on a teat; bleeding
- The animal suddenly refusing milking on that side, kicking at touch
- Swelling and bruising after a trample — sometimes without an open wound
- Milk leaking from the WOUND itself — the flag of a deep, canal-reaching cut
- Later: heat, clots or wateriness in the quarter as infection follows injury
संभावित कारण
- Trodden by herself or a neighbour, classically when rising — tight packing and slippery floors
- Barbed wire, thorns, sharp trough edges and protruding nails
- Calf teeth in suckling systems; rough milking aggravating small wounds
- Low-slung, pendulous udders in older heavy milkers meeting more hazards
- Winter chapping cracks deepening into true wounds
किसान को क्या जाँचना चाहिए
- Depth triage first: graze/shallow cut, or gaping/deep — and is MILK seeping from the wound line?
- Bleeding control needed?
- Can the teat still be milked, and does milk flow normally through the canal?
- Tetanus/dirt status of the wound; flies around?
- Why it happened: the floor, the spacing, the wire — still waiting to repeat?

Deep, gaping or milk-leaking teat wounds need same-day veterinary care, and any injured quarter developing heat, clots or watery milk is urgent mastitis territory.
